EUGENE, Oregon — Three field event champions and a pair of 5,000m winners were crowned Thursday on the first day of the USATF U20 Championships at Hayward Field, the first time the meet has been held since 2019. Rhode Island state champion Tarik O’Hagan (Woonsocket, Rhode Island/USATF New England) moved to No. 5 on the all-time U.S. U20 performer list in the men’s hammer with an opening round blast of 75.08m/246-4 and he held off Penn State’s Colin Burkhart (Nazareth, Pennsylvania/USATF Mid-Atlantic) for the win as Burkhart went 72.58m/238-1 in the fifth round to end up second. Jeremiah Nubbe (Yelm, Washington/USATF Pacific Northwest) took third with a best of 70.79m/232-3. BYU freshman Analee Weaver (North Logan, Utah/USATF Utah) started a ferocious finishing kick from 800m out to run away with the title in the Women's 5000m, finishing in 16:25.67. Behind her, Arkansas’s Heidi Nielson (Katy, Texas/USATF Gulf) held strong to lock up the second position in 16:30.50 - the only competitor to finish within twenty seconds of Weaver’s time. Early on, the race was led by 16-year-old Ellie Shea (Belmont, Massachusetts/USATF New England), but she would succumb to the hot pace and step off of the track just after two miles. Oregon’s Harper McClain (Saint Helena, California/USATF Pacific) rounded out the podium with her third-place finish in 16:48.23. Oregon high school state 3,000m champion Tyrone Gorze (Central Point, Oregon/USATF Oregon), built up a healthy lead in the men’s 5,000m over the first half of the race, going through the 3km mark in 8:25.90, more than five seconds ahead of the nearest challenger. Gorze continued to lead through 4km in 11:18.99, but Dylan Throop (Edinboro, Pennsylvania/USATF Three Rivers) and Jacob Bourget (Stevens Point, Wisconsin/USATF Wisconsin) began to make up ground and closed the gap in the final lap to come within range but couldn’t catch Gorze, who crossed the line in 14:08.08. Throop had the best kick for second, finishing in 14:09.22, with Bourget third at 14:09.74. Throwing on her home runway, Oregon’s Kohana Nakato (Bend, Oregon/USATF Oregon) won the women’s javelin with a fifth-round throw of 48.11m/157-10. Army West Point’s Emily Fink (West Point, New York/USATF New York) hit 59.94m/196-8 on her third attempt in the women’s hammer and it held up for the win over UCLA’s Jillian Stafford (Dana Point, California/USATF Southern California), who had a best of 59.52m/195-3 in the same round. Washington’s high school heptathlon champion, JaiCieonna Gero-Holt (Puyallup, Washington/USATF Pacific Northwest), cleared 1.81m/5-11.25 in the high jump and won the shot put with a throw of 12.04m/39-6 on the way to a first-day score of 3,371 points to lead by 136 over Pittsburg State’s Blakelee Winn (Pea Ridge, Arkansas/USATF Arkansas). Winn, the NCAA Division II bronze medalist, had the fastest time in the 100m hurdles at 14.38 and also won the 200m in 24.54 to finish with 3,235. After five events in the men’s decathlon, Bryce Pearson (Long Beach, California/USATF Southern California) of Cerritos College had the lead with 3,499 points, 212 ahead of Landon Helms (Emmet, Idaho/USATF Snake River).
