Christie's 35km walk performance earns him USATF Athlete of the Week honors
INDIANAPOLIS — Walking the second-fastest 35km ever by an American,
Nick Christie
(El Cajon, California/USATF San Diego-Imperial) earned recognition as the 44th USATF Athlete of the Week award winner for 2022.
Christie finished second in the 35km race walk at the Irish Championships in Dublin, finishing in 2:41:03 after passing through the 20km split in 1:29:20. Starting the year with a win at the USATF 35km Championships in California in January, Christie followed up with a 2:41:08 to take 36th at the World Championships in Eugene. He set the American record of 2:38:16 at the Irish Championships in 2021.
Other top performances from last week:
Sergio Reyes, 41, won the San Diego Holiday Half Marathon by 16 seconds in 62:29. Last week, Reyes was the USATF Club Cross Country masters men's 10km champion.
Jamie Davis, 42, bettered the American masters women's 40-44 indoor pole vault record with a 3.55m/11-7.75 clearance at the Above the Bar 550 PV Meet in Colorado.
Now in its 21st year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week when there are high-level competitions and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
