Dick Hoyt, who inspired thousands of runners, parents and disabled athletes by pushing his son, Rick, in a custom racing chair in dozens of Boston Marathons and hundreds of other races, passed away at his home in Massachusetts on Wednesday morning. He was 80. Boston Marathon fan-favorites, the father-son duo competed in the Boston Marathon for the first time in 1980 and went on to complete the race 32 times together, including a final finish in 2014. They participated in more than 1,000 races, including duathlons and triathlons and in 1992 even completed a run and bike across the U.S., covering 3,735 miles (6,010 kilometers) in 45 days, according to Team Hoyt’s website. Funeral arrangements are pending.
