Morris’ pole vault wins earn her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sandi Morris (Fayetteville, Arkansas) won twice and scared the world indoor record in the women’s pole vault to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Morris, who won the USATF Indoors title at Albuquerque the previous weekend, cleared 4.83m/15-10 at Liévin, France, and had three good attempts at what would have been a world indoor record of 5.03m/16-6. She followed up with a 4.80m/15-9 winning clearance at Clermont-Ferrand, France, to finish her indoor season with four meets at that height or higher.

Other notable performances from the past week:
  • Chris Nilsen — Nilsen set a collegiate indoor record in the men’s pole vault with his 5.93m/19-5.5 clearance at the Nebraska Tune-Up. That jump moved him to =4th on the all-time U.S. indoor list.
  • Ronnie Baker — Baker won the men’s 60m twice on the World Athletics Indoor Tour, dashing to a pair of 6.44 victories in Liévin, France, and Madrid. Those wins helped propel him to the overall tour title in the 60m.
  • Christina Clemons — Clemons won the women’s 60m hurdles overall title on the World Indoor Tour after a season-best 7.82 on the final tour stop at Madrid.
Now in its 19th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2020 Winners: January 9, Miranda Melville; January 16, Paul Perry; January 23, Natosha Rogers; January 30, Tyler Day, February 6, Devin Dixon; February 13, Elle Purrier; February 20, Tori Franklin; February 27, Sandi Morris.
