Melville’s walk win earns her USATF Athlete of the Week honors

INDIANAPOLIS -- Miranda Melville (Chula Vista, California) won the women’s title at the USATF Indoor 5K Race Walk Championships to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Melville, a 2016 Olympian and three-time World Championships Team USATF member in the 20K walk, clocked 22:37.90 over the 25-lap race at Rochester, New York, on Dec. 29 to win the women’s race by more than three minutes and place third overall in the mixed competition. Her en route 3,000m time of 13:30.47 also qualified her for the USATF Indoor Championships at Albuquerque on Feb. 14-15.

Other notable performances from the past week:

  • Jenn Suhr — Suhr cleared 4.71m/15-5.5 to win the Expo Explosion pole vault competition at Belton, Texas.
  • Cody Risch — Risch was the men’s champion at the USATF 5K indoor Race Walk Championships with a 21:36.88, winning by almost a minute.
Now in its 19th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
