Brooke Rauber caps stellar 2020 season with JOXC title
Paris, Kentucky - Four more USATF Future Stars were crowned national champions Sunday at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on a new course at Bourbon County Park in Paris, Kentucky. The Championships held Saturday and Sunday, December 12-13, were scheduled across two days, as opposed to the usual single day event, to accommodate multiple starting waves for each age division.
In the first race of the day, a combined field with the 15-16 girls and the 17-18 girls hit the course for the 5k national title.
Brooke Rauber
(Unattached), who entered with the best submitted time, shot out to the front with
Carmen Alder
(Franklin Elite Athletics Track Club) but separated around the 2k mark and never looked back. Rauber claimed the 17-18 division title with a personal best time of 16:52.7 winning by more than 30-seconds with Alder taking second in 17:25.2.
Hannah Lelfield
took third overall in the 17-18 division crossing the line in 17:59.5.
Rauber’s title caps a spectacular year of cross country in which she won the USATF U20 title January 18 before going on to win U20 gold for Team USATF at the Pan American Cup in Canada on February 29.
In the 15-16 division, Carmen’s sister
Vanessa Alder
(Franklin Elite Athletics Track Club) dominated on her way to win the title in 17:41.8.
Mia Loafman
(Triple Threat Racing) placed second in 18:22.1 and
Jana Stiffler
(GR FIRE) finished third in 18:39.9. In the combined results. Venessa finished in third behind Rauber and her sister Carmen.
In the boys 5k 17-18 division, which like the girls’ race was also combined with the 15-16 division, Keller Norland (Timberhill Harriers) took the title out of wave two crossing the line in 15:14.6 to overtake
Ryan Young
’s (New England Elite Track Club) 15:39.4 in the first wave.
Marshall Bush
(Oregon Road Runners) was third in the division in 15:42.4
Nathan Lopez
(New England Elite Track Club) who won the first wave finished with the second fastest time of the day in whining the 15-16 division in 15:35.8.
Drew Costelow
(Center Grove Track & XC Club) slowed up the final hill into the finish to take second in 15:40.3 with
Alden Keller
(Unattached) third in 15:57.4.
In the girls 4k 13-14 division, the 2019 runner-up
Sadie Engelhardt
(Valley United Track Club) took the lead in the first wave about two-minutes into the race and never looked back, winning the title in 14:31.4.
Alexis Leone
(Whisper Running) crossed the line first in the second wave, good for second place overall in 14:47.1 and
Tula Fawbush
(Derby CIty AC) was third in 14:53.8 following a second-place finish in the first wave.
In the final race of the day,
Maximus Cervi-Skinner
(N. Idaho XC) won the boys 4k 13-14 division in 13:15.0 with
Thomas Latham
(Alpha Crush Running Club) taking second in 13:20.4 and
Jack Capes
(Unattached) finished third in 13:31.3.
