USA and Canada split wins in the 31st annual USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match held at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on Saturday. Participants enjoyed good competition over a flat and shaded one-kilometer course.
The men’s 10 km race was the first match event with a tight lead pack breaking up after four laps. At that point, Canada's Tyler Wilson moved to the front and gradually extended his lead over the chase pack of three Americans through the finish. Leading Team USA was Jordan Crawford (Douglasville Georgia), second in 50:25, followed by Jacob Lawson (Chester Springs, Pennsylvania) in 50:36 and Sam Allen (Woolwich Township, New Jersey) in 50:46. Sean Glaze (Springfield, Ohio) was the final U.S. finisher, eighth in 55:25. Using a 7-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system and allowing three from each country to score, USA topped Canada 12-10.
The women's 5km race found Grace Endy (Westfield, New Jersey) leading her five Canadian opponents through the first four laps. Canadian Joean Lu moved ahead of Endy with 750 meters to go and held on for the individual win in 23:25 with Endy second in 25:34. The visitors secured places three through six to win the team competition 14-8. Other American finishers in the match were Chloe Engin (Fairport, New York) seventh, 28:13, Rithika Vatturi (Union City, California) ninth in 29:24, and Natalie Ehlers (Quogue, New York) ninth in 29:48.
Competing in the women’s race as a non-scoring guest, Taylor Ewert (Beavercreek OH) clocked the fastest time overall, crossing the line in 23:25.
Canada won the combined team scoring trophy for the second straight year following eight consecutive wins by the US from 2010-2017.
The event was hosted by the USATF Mid-Atlantic association and included an all-comers race prior to the international competition. The 2020 races will be held in Canada.
