Missouri Valley Association and Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission bids for 2011 USATF Junior Olympics National Track & Field Championship
September 8, 2009
On Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 3:00 p.m., a Press Conference was held at Wichita State University to announce an effort to bring the 2011 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships to the Missouri Valley Association. The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, in conjunction with USATF Missouri Valley Association, Go Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau and Wichita State University, officially submitted the bid. The USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championship is USATF's premier youth track & field championship. The USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships is the most visible youth athletic development program in the world. Many of today's Olympic stars began their track and field careers competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. If awarded the event, the city of Wichita will experience an influx of over 6,500 youth athletes, their coaches, parents and friends. Bob Hanson, President of the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, estimates the economic impact between $11 and $13 million. The Honorable Carl Brewer, Mayor of Wichita, expressed the city's commitment to the effort to secure this championship. If awarded the championship, the Missouri Valley Association will establish two new programs for youth within the Association: (1) Missouri Valley Association's ACT/SAT Scholarship Program; and (2) Missouri Valley Association Travel Grants Program.

Honor the Spirit of Cooperation between USATF and AAU Summer Track & Field Schedule
May 11, 2009
On the national level USATF and AAU have been working together to avoid conflicts in the scheduling of their respective events. In keeping with this spirit of cooperation, the Missouri Valley Association/USATF and the Missouri Valley AAU conducted discussions during the winter and early spring months to develop a calendar of meets that also avoids conflicts in our local organizations. The resulting calendar of meets can be found at out website on the
event schedule
As the National Governing Body (NGB) for track & field, USATF has accepted its responsibility to promote USA's Olympic Development program by increasing participation opportunities for youth. Coordinating competition schedules is one way to advance the sport, create participation opportunities for youth within the Association and avoid scheduling USATF non-championship meets on the same date as AAU District Qualifying Championships. I would hope youth clubs and the general membership of the Missouri Valley Association would honor the joint summer track & field schedule adopted by USATF and AAU and not schedule meets that conflict with AAU and USATF Championship track & field meets. Scheduling a USATF non-championship track & field meet on the same date as an AAU Championship track & field event undermines the spirit of cooperation that we are working to develop within the Missouri Valley Association. Please respect the Joint USATF and AAU Summer Track & Field Schedule by participating in events on the joint schedule on USATF's website.
